Movable Books

Pop-up books are ingenious displays of biblio origami. Now there's one on Frank Lloyd Wright.

Book Cover In case you are wondering, the pop-up book has been around for centuries, more often referred to as a movable book. There was a wave of popularity in the U.S.A. in the 1930s, but it wasn’t until the ‘60’s that they achieved widespread appeal (mostly for children’s books). A recent spate of such biblio-origami has caught my eagle eye.

French graphic designer Marion Bataille’s ABC3D (Roaring Brook Press; see video below) is a visual marvel and the cleverest alphabet book in my recollection.

White Noise (Little Simon) is one in a series of David Carter’s dazzlingly entertaining and charmingly original books.

The great work of inimitable architect Frank Lloyd Wright is rendered in three dimensions in Roland Lewis’s Frank Lloyd Wright in Pop-Up (Thunder Bay Press). Ennis House, Fallingwater, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Robie House are included, each accompanied by a detailed history, photographs, plans, and drawings.

If you have never experienced a Frank Lloyd Wright creation, this wonderful book could be the next best thing to being on site.
